Humanized Dentistry

Any health and illness situation that makes us vulnerable in the face of life is configured as a moment of existential crisis. It is as if our relationship between past, present and future changes from the onset of a symptom, the result of an exam, an accident or other event that makes us physically and/or mentally vulnerable. Much of what we knew about ourselves or hoped for in the future ceases to be and gives way to everything that permeates the new existential condition.

Even when the picture seems to be only of an organic nature, everything that happens impacts our being integrally, bringing emotional, social, spiritual and economic consequences to a greater or lesser degree.

Thus, when we get sick, we experience the most varied emotions, we experience different feelings and new and unexpected situations, for which we do not always have the internal resources to deal with.

When undergoing treatment, our adherence and trust will depend on our security in the team that takes care of us. And, in this aspect, many studies show that the patient-family and team relationship is as important as the quality of the technical treatment that is offered to us.

But how do we know if we are receiving care that humanizes us in our condition and favors our care and recovery?

A humanized care is one that considers the integrality of the “care unit”, that is, it presupposes the union between the quality of technical treatment and the quality of the relationship that develops between patient, family and team.

We are receiving humanized care when:

  • Treatment based on professional ethics.

  • The treatment is individualized, that is, it considers the person as a whole and does not classify them in a general way according to their diagnosis or general condition.

  • Care is carried out with empathy, attention and comprehensive care for the patient and his family/companion.

  • There is an attentive and differentiated listening, with the presence of a sensitive look at human issues.

  • There is respect for intimacy and differences.

  • Communication is efficient and allows the exchange of information taking into account the emotional state of the patient and family.

  • The service conveys confidence, security and support.

  • The physical structure meets the needs of care and treatment.
